Quartessence is the newest small ensemble and is designed to bring great vocal music to Canadian stages in all parts of the country. With soprano, tenor and bass-baritone, Quartessence will bring to life a programme of memorable favourites which will fill concert halls with familiar solos, duets and trios from some of the best known operas, operettas and musical theatre.

Designed by pianist and opera coach, Tina Chang, Quartessence features Allyson Hop, soprano, Martin Sadd, tenor and Peter Monaghan, bass-baritone. The ensemble will present an evening of vocal delights featuring such all-time favourites as the duet from The Pearl Fishers, the great love song from La Boheme, unforgettable trios from Marriage of Figaro and Faust as well as audience favourites from Carousel and Sound of Music.

Allyson Hop, soprano, has appeared with Opera ViVace as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and as The Countess in their production of the Marriage of Figaro. She played the role of Le Cercatrici in Suor Angelica with Opera on the Avalon and was Grandmother in Vancouver Opera’s recent touring production of Stickboy. Most recently she performed the title role in Rusalka with the Vancouver Summer Opera Workshop, and next season she will be appearing as a featured soloist in the Vancouver Opera production of Requiem for a Lost Girl.

Martin Sadd, tenor, has sung the major roles of Rodolfo in La Boheme, The Duke in Rigoletto, The Mayor in Albert Herring and Nanki Poo in The Mikado. Most recently, he appeared as Rodriguez in the Vancouver Opera production of Verdi’s Otello. His operatic appearances have been with Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, Burnaby Lyric Opera and Calgary Opera. As a member of Opera Victoria’s Young Artists’ Programme, he has also appeared as soloist with the Victoria Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Gilbert and Sullivan Society, the Sooke Philharmonic and the Vancouver Academy of Music.

Peter Monaghan, bass-baritone has sung in Turandot, La Boheme, Marriage of Figaro and Hansel and Gretel for Vancouver Opera. He has also appeared in Beauty and the Beast for Theatre Under the Stars. As a member of the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program with Vancouver Opera, he most recently was featured as bass soloist in the Vancouver Bach Choir joint production of Mahler's 8th symphony.

Tina Chang, producer, accompanist and vocal coach
Taiwanese born pianist and vocal coach Tina Chang has served as Music Director at the Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland, as assistant coach to the Glimmerglass Opera productions and as coach and répétiteur at major summer opera productions in Minneapolis and San Diego. In 2016-17 she toured extensively throughout BC and Alberta with Quintessence and now is organizing touring activity for the Quartessence ensemble. Ms. Chang is currently on the music staff of Vancouver Opera and was previously on the faculty of the Dalhousie University music department.

Commenting on the Quartessence appearance at Pt. Alberni, pianist-director Tina Chang stated: “No longer must opera and music theatre be limited to the great opera houses and theatres of the world’s largest cities. We’re designed for communities and concert halls of all sizes. This is Opera for everyone”
